Fall Furnace Maintenance Tips

Your furnace has had a break over the warm summer months, but things are cooling down, and it’s time to pay it a little attention. Keeping on top of your furnace maintenance will ensure your home is warm, comfortable, and efficient this winter. In addition, it can reduce strain on your HVAC system, prevent breakdowns, and ensure your natural gas furnace is running safely.

Fagnan’s Furnace Service offers furnace maintenance and repairs. We are a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer but work on all makes and models. Here are some fall furnace maintenance tips. Some you can do yourself, and others require a professional.

DIY: Replace the filter

You should change your HVAC filter every three months or as specified by the manufacturer. Now is an excellent time to stock up on filters, so you’ll have them to swap out during the winter. Set a reminder for yourself, so you don’t forget to replace them. In addition, you can write the date on the frame of the filter so you can be sure when you installed it.

DIY: Clear the vents

Once that furnace starts running, you want to ensure the warm air is distributed properly throughout the home. Make sure furniture is not blocking heat or intake vents. Otherwise, the room might not heat efficiently.

You can also clean the accessible part of your vents. For example, registers on the floor can get dirty with dust, debris and crud falling into them. You can often reach the vent’s elbow with your vacuum hose. You can also remove the vent plates and wash them in soapy water.

PRO: Furnace inspection and tune-up

Contact us for a thorough furnace inspection this fall. We will give it a full multi-point inspection that includes checking the heat exchanger, blower, burner, electrical connections, thermostat, and other components. If we see an issue, we’ll fix it for you. We’ll also change the filter and lubricate moving parts if necessary. Annual furnace inspections ensure your furnace is running safely, efficiently, and can extend the life of your HVAC system.

PRO: Duct cleaning

Book a professional duct cleaning this fall if you didn’t do it in the spring. Removing dust and debris from your ducts has many benefits. It creates cleaner indoor air quality, preventing symptoms for those with asthma and allergies. It also reduces strain on your HVAC system and can improve efficiency.

PRO: Natural gas inspection

In addition, you should have all your natural gas appliances checked in the fall. While your furnace is the primary user of natural gas in a Calgary home, you’ll want to get your natural gas range, fireplace, and BBQ checked too.

ATCO Gas performs natural gas appliance inspections for free. They’ll ensure your appliances are leak-free and safe to use for another winter. A natural gas inspection protects you and your family from potential carbon monoxide leaks, which can be extremely dangerous and even fatal.
