Is it time for a new furnace?

If your furnace gave you issues last winter, you might consider a new furnace this year. A furnace usually lasts about 15 to 20 years, but we’ve replaced furnaces over 100 years old! That said, replacing your furnace before an irreparable breakdown is essential. You don’t want to be left in the cold this winter!

Here are some signs it’s time for a new furnace:

Your furnace is old and inefficient

If your furnace is more than 20 years old, it might be nearing the end of its lifespan. If you’re unsure how old your furnace is, you can learn how to determine the age of your furnace.

However, you shouldn’t always rush to replace a functioning furnace just because it’s old. Fagnan’s Furnace Service can perform an inspection this fall and let you know if there are significant issues and make recommendations. Replacing your aging furnace might be the best option if you want to improve energy efficiency.

Soaring energy bills

Natural gas prices and distribution fees have risen over the past year. But even though everyone is paying a little more, a sudden unexplained spike in your gas usage this winter could indicate an issue with your HVAC system.

HVAC technology has come a long way in recent years. Unfortunately, an aging furnace will not perform at peak efficiency. It might need repairs, but operating costs might be reason enough for a furnace replacement.

Strange sounds or smells

Squealing, rattling, grinding, and banging are all tell-tale signs your furnace needs attention. It might mean a repair or a replacement. It could also indicate a problem if you notice a musty odour in the furnace room while it’s running. If you see anything visibly wrong with the furnace, like a crack or corrosion, that is a serious issue. Call us for a service appointment right away.

Your home is cold and uncomfortable

If your home feels cold or has uneven heat from room to room, the furnace is an excellent first place to investigate. An older furnace with single-speed blower settings could be struggling to provide even and consistent heat. It can also be an issue with your thermostat. Fagnan’s Furnace Service can inspect and troubleshoot these issues.

Other things cause a chilly house. For example, check windows and doors for air leaks and drafts. You might also need an insulation upgrade as older insulation can compress and lose its thermal performance over time.
